The European Union aims to ensure that only safe products are introduced to the European market and that risky products can be swiftly removed.
Product Safety
EU product safety rules are defined in the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR).
The GPSR aims to:
- Ensure that products in the digital age comply with European safety standards;
- Improve enforcement of product safety regulations;
- Streamline market surveillance and the recall of dangerous non-food products.
In addition, the GPSR facilitates the process of repairing, returning, or replacing unsafe products for the benefit of consumers:
- If a product is found to be unsafe, economic operators must immediately take corrective actions and inform market surveillance authorities;
- If a product is recalled, consumers will have the right to have it repaired, replaced, or refunded.
The GPSR also establishes a market surveillance framework that applies to all products within the single market.
Market Surveillance
EU countries are responsible for market surveillance within their territories, carried out by their national authorities.
Market surveillance authorities check product compliance with EU safety requirements, and when a potential risk to consumers is identified, they take appropriate actions (such as recalls, penalties, or issuing warnings).
Safety Gate
Safety Gate is the EU’s rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products.
Since 2003, it has enabled EU and EEA countries to quickly exchange information when a product poses a risk to consumer health and safety. National authorities can then take appropriate corrective measures.
